‘Outstanding’ work by officers behind good police report

OUTSTANDING work on a day-to-day basis by South Yorkshire Police officers is one reason behind the force’s recent ‘good’ PEEL report rating.

Overall, last month’s PEEL report from the Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) revealed that forces in the UK were doing a good job despite facing substantial cuts and extra workload demands.

It said that cracks were beginning to show in the national force but praised officers for their efforts in keeping policing standards high.

The South Yorkshire force was rated good, but that improvement was required in its ‘vulnerability’ section which details how it deals with and responds to vulnerable people.

“It’s good to see that the report recognised the outstanding work done by South Yorkshire officers every day,” said Federation Chair Zuleika Payne.

“With regard to the vulnerability improvements, we could have probably foreseen that, and as a force we are not without some legacy issues from the past which we are perhaps still being judged on.

“But Chief Constable Stephen Watson is very ambitious that we improve, and the report certainly shows that we are moving in the right direction.

“It’s so important that the legacy issues don’t overshadow the sterling work being done by officers in South Yorkshire.

“Officers work tirelessly day in and day out, their efforts must be recognised.”
