Brave Officers Save Distressed Woman On Bridge

The Chair of South Yorkshire Police Federation has praised three officers who saved a distressed woman on a bridge in Doncaster.

PC Hannah Johnson was off-duty when she spotted a woman on the wrong side of a bridge in the Balby area. She stopped her car and went to speak to the woman to encourage her to safely come away from the side of the bridge.

She alerted colleagues of the situation, and PC Cameron Taylor and PC Andy Smith arrived to assist. Thanks to the trio’s actions, the woman was safely brought over the railings and escorted off the bridge, where she was seen by paramedics.

South Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Steve Kent said: “This shows the amazing work our officers do, day in and day out. The media, sadly, is obsessed with the bad stories and allegations of where policing has got it wrong. But we’re out there every day, saving people’s lives and making a difference, like these officers did that day.

“It’s such a shame that the public don’t get to see the full picture of policing, because if they did I think there’d be a different perception as to what policing’s all about. We are almost the mechanics of society, and we deal with every problem that we come across.

“I’ve been involved in situations like this, as I’m sure has every officer in South Yorkshire, so when you add all those cases up together, that’s hundreds of people’s lives we’ve saved over the years.”
