Hammerton Road Police Station demolition begins

DEMOLITION work has begun at Hammerton Road Police Station as discussions continue about the site’s future use.

Sheffield North West Local Policing Team (LPT) has been working out of Hayes House since November 2014, when Hammerton Road station was closed.  South Yorkshire Police has since received the relevant planning clearance for the safe demolition of the building.

Chief Superintendent David Hartley, LPU Commander for Sheffield, described the ageing building as a “fantastic servant to the force” but said it had become “outdated, inefficient to run and no longer fit for purpose” when it closed nearly two years ago.

“It needs to be demolished for safety reasons and we now have the necessary clearance to move ahead with this work. Discussions continue to take place about the future use of the Hammerton Road site but key to this process is the forthcoming review of the force’s operating model,” he said.

“The new interim Chief Constable, Stephen Watson, has spoken of the need to restore an effective neighbourhood policing function in South Yorkshire, with officers and PCSOs increasingly active and knowledgeable in local communities, so we will need to consider the implications of the review across the city.”
