Critical Incident TV show highlights dangers officers face on the frontline

SOUTH Yorkshire Police Federation says a dramatic incident which featured on BBC TV crime show Critical Incident highlights the dangers officers can face out on the frontline.

Back in May 2018, PCs Del Owen and Ben Hawley were called to reports of an aggravated burglary at a One Stop Shop in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield.

They were the first on scene and had very limited knowledge of what they were to face.

Thinking only of the safety of the terrified staff inside who had called 999, they went into the shop and split up to tackle the two offenders, one of whom was brandishing a giant machete.

Bravely the officers disarmed the man and arrested them both.

“Unfortunately, we hear about these kinds of incidents on a quite regular basis, and they don’t always get the attention that they do. I’m glad this one has,” South Yorkshire Police Federation Chairman Steve Kent said.

“It’s something that goes on all the time, and our officers don’t even think twice, they just selflessly go out and get hold of these people and do what they do.

“I’m proud of these officers and all our officers who deal with these sorts of incidents and worse all the time.

“The public should be proud as well because our cops, who are real people, are out there are doing this kind of thing every day.”
