The promotions process is failing to adequately prepare new sergeants and inspectors for leadership roles, the South Yorkshire Police Federation has warned.<\/p>\n
A new survey found that only 11% of sergeants and 16% of inspectors received any training before being promoted. Of those who did, many said it did not properly prepare them for the demands of their new rank.<\/p>\n
Steve Kent, Chair of the South Yorkshire Police Federation, said the current system places too much emphasis on passing an assessment rather than demonstrating leadership ability.<\/p>\n
He said: “The promotion process is not fit for purpose because it promotes people on their ability to pass a process rather than their ability to do the role.<\/p>\n
“We are reviewing our promotion processes within the force, so change is happening. But we really do need to identify the right people, nurture them and develop them into these roles.”<\/p>\n
Steve said that while some newly promoted officers require significant support, others excel from the outset.<\/p>\n
He added: “Some people are fantastic and do a great job from day one.<\/p>\n
“I think there needs to be more structured training and a more robust promotion system so we can get the right people through the door who are equipped from the off.<\/p>\n
“Some people are naturally suited to these roles, and we should be supporting that, while also providing additional training for those who need a little more help.\u201d<\/p>\n
