PC Winton to Attend Bravery Awards After Facing Down Killer in Harrowing Incident
A South Yorkshire Police officer will head down to London this month to attend the National Police Bravery Awards.
PC Jessica Winton will take her place among the nation’s most courageous officers during a reception at Downing Street and a glittering London ceremony.
Earlier this year she was named South Yorkshire Police Federation’s 2025 Bravery Award winner after confronting an armed killer.
On 5 August 2023, Jess was one of the first officers to respond to a domestic violence call near Doncaster. What she found was horrific. On the patio, the man was kneeling over the woman and surrounded with blood.
She pushed him off and saw that not only had he stabbed the woman multiple times in the back, but he had also stabbed himself through the heart with the same kitchen knife.
PC WInton took control of the situation and stayed with the victim, trying to comfort her and reassure her as they fought to save her life.
Despite their best efforts, the woman sadly died on her way to hospital. The suspect survived and has since been jailed for life with a minimum term of 19 years.
The judge at trial personally praised PC Witton for saving the attacker’s life and for her extraordinary professionalism and composure under pressure.
Steve Kent, Chair of South Yorkshire Police Federation, said it was “brilliant” to see Jess recognised again.
“This is the second award she got locally, and this time she rightfully won our awards. We think it’s a fantastic example. The footage of the incident is truly harrowing and our thoughts remain with the family and people concerned.
“Jess was fantastic. Her and her colleagues did a fantastic job at that incident, but she just went over and above and vaulted into that situation. We’re so proud of her.”
