PC Jess Witton’s Bravery Celebrated

A PC who faced down a killer and brought him to justice received huge praise during a prestigious awards evening.

Jess Witton, from South Yorkshire Police, acted swiftly to enter a property during the incident near Doncaster in 2023, despite the threat it posed to her life.

Her courage was rewarded by the force’s Federation during its National Police Bravery Awards, with Chair Steve Kent saying: “It’s a remarkable thing that she went in there.”

Steve said the incident, which a woman tragically lost her life in, was “horrendous” and that Jess was a worthy winner of the overall bravery award.

He said: “Jess is somebody who plays it down because she’s so modest, but she did go into that property on her own.

“It’s just a remarkable thing, and the fact it’s the second time she’s been to our awards just speaks volumes.

“It’s an absolute testament to her personality and I’m really pleased that she’s off to London to represent our force.

“I think Jess is a reminder to us that there is still a lot of love for the job out there and people are very proud of what they do.”

The awards evening was a huge success, with the force’s bravest and best represented throughout the occasion.

Steve said he was “absolutely over the moon” to share the finest work of officers.

He continued: “The most important thing is the officers who got the awards were all really excited by it and fully enjoyed the night.

“It gives us great exposure to the things that our officers do week in, week out, which often get forgotten by the public and the media.

“We were the first northern force to start these awards and I’m still very proud of them.”
