Service prepares for National Police Memorial Day

THIS year’s National Police Memorial Day will be held at the St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Sunday 25 September.

The 13th annual event will remember around 4,000 officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty – and the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice over the past year will be read out.

Remembered this year will be PC Douglas Wiggins, of Police Scotland; PC Sahib Lalli, of the Met; and Merseyside’s PC David Phillips.

Founded by Sergeant Joe Holness QPM in 2001, National Police Memorial Day ensures that fallen officers are never forgotten and that their unique, proud legacy is forever treasured.

He said: “The British Police Service is renowned worldwide and its unique and priceless reputation is entirely a reflection of the professionalism of the men and women who proudly perform the role.

“Sadly, each year police officers give their lives in order that we may all live in peace. They place the safety of others above that of their own – they do so with pride and because they are the best.”

Each year the service is held at one of the four countries of the UK and this year’s service will be at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 25 September at 3pm.
